Deciding to use CBD oil as a natural therapy is one thing, but figuring out which brand to use, what CBD oil strength or concentration to use, and how much CBD to actually take is another thing altogether. With all of the products out there to choose from and their confusing labels, it can be a nightmare trying to determine which is best for you.
In this article, we go over how to choose the right strength CBD oil, depending on what you’re trying to find relief from. Thousands of people everyday use CBD as a therapy for a range of issues, but it is important to have an idea of the right concentration to use in order to get the best results.
Of course, we always remind readers that most CBD products on the market are not approved by the FDA, and are not recognized as drugs or medicines. The only exception is Epidiolex, which is a prescription cannabidiol drug used to treat two rare forms of epilepsy.
With this in mind, none of the information we provide here in this article should be interpreted as medical advice. If at all possible, arrange an appointment to speak with a healthcare professional about the proper use and dosing of CBD oil.
Different Strengths/Potencies of CBD Oil
There are dozens of CBD manufacturers out there to choose from, and most offer oils in at least two or three different potencies or concentrations. Which concentration you choose should depend on what you’re looking to get out of the product.
CBD hemp oil potencies can range anywhere from 100mg to upwards of 5,000mg for a single 30 mL (1 oz) bottle, which is considered industry standard size. A 300 mg bottle would generally be regarded as a low-potency option. Based on cost alone, this is a popular strength range most people start out on.
It is recommended you start with a low potency product first, at least until you gauge how your body reacts to the CBD. Because everybody’s biochemistry is different, not everyone will react the same or get the same therapeutic effects from CBD oil or other CBD products.
Also, starting with the lowest potency oil lets you adequately gauge how much CBD it takes to garner positive results. If you’re trying to find relief from pain, for example, and you jump right into a high-strength 1,000 mg+ bottle, you’ll have no idea how much it took to provide relief — even if it ends up working well for you.
If you start with a lower-strength option, on the other hand, you can start with a small 1-2 mg dose. Yet, if that doesn’t work, you can increase to a 3, 4, or 5 mg dose and see what that does. If you jump straight into a heavy 50+ mg dose and receive adequate results, you’ll never know if a smaller dose would’ve worked just as well, which would have saved you money.
CBD Oil Strength Explained
Before we discuss dosing, in this section, ‘CBD oil strength explained,’ we will highlight some important things to know about different CBD oil strengths.
The bottle size that the CBD oil comes in has to be taken into account when calculating its potency. Let’s look at a straightforward example first. You have two different 30ml CBD oil bottles; one contains 300mg of CBD and the other 600mg. In this case, the 300mg bottle contains 10mg of CBD per ml, and the 600mg bottle contains 20mg per ml.
Now, here is another example where the bottle size is significant. Suppose there are two bottles of CBD oil; both have 300mg of CBD. However, one bottle contains 15ml of liquid, while the other has 30ml. In this case, the smaller 15ml bottle’s CBD concentration is double that of its 30ml counterpart with 20mg of CBD per ml against 10mg.
So, if you are looking for the strongest CBD oil you can find, bear in mind that the bottle’s size needs to be taken into account. The good news is that many leading CBD brands, such as PureKana and Premium Jane, list the milligram of CBD per serving on their packaging, as well as on the product pages of their respective websites.
CBD oil dosage: 300mg, 600mg, and 1000mg options
Like we said, once you start using CBD oil more frequently and are able to gauge how much you need, you can jump up to the more high-potency products as needed. For reference, doses typically range anywhere from 5 mg to 100+ mg in a single day.
Here is a quick rundown of three common CBD oil potencies, and what the majority of people use them for.
Low-potency CBD oil (300 mg)
This is relatively low-potency oil and is a good option for individuals who are just starting out or who may be sensitive to CBD (and/or cannabis in general). Some people have a more active endocannabinoid system than do others, so they will naturally not require as strong of an oil.
A low-strength 300 mg bottle is a good option to take as a daily supplement. Many people take a single daily dose of it for boosted general health, and also to help lower stress levels.
A single serving of a 300 mg (30 mL) bottle of CBD oil is equivalent to 1 mL (20 drops) of oil. This translates to a 10 mg dose of CBD. Many people won’t use a full dose though, and will instead use as little as 5-7 drops of oil, which translates to about a 5-6 mg dose.
Mid-potency CBD oil (600 mg)
A 600 mg hemp oil is a good “step-up” option for people who find they’re having to take large (and/or multiple) doses of a lower potency. In general, a lot of people use products in this strength range for things like anxiety and day-to-day pain. A single dose would still be defined as 20 drops (1 mL) of oil, but instead of containing 10 mg of CBD, a 600 mg bottle would contain 20 mg per serving.
High-potency CBD oil (1,000 mg)
The 1,000 mg range is on the upper end of the potency scale for most CBD oil companies. Products in this strength range are commonly used for sleep issues, deep muscle soreness, migraines, and day-to-day stress and anxiety.
Just like the 300 and 600 mg products, most 1,000mg hemp oils come in a 30 mL bottle. A single 20-drop serving equates to a CBD dose of approximately 33.3mg. In most instances, users won’t have much use for a higher-strength product than this. Here’s a basic table summarizing which CBD oil strength may be best for you:
CBD OIL DOSAGE TABLE
|POTENCY||BOTTLE SIZE||AMOUNT OF CBD IN A
SINGLE 1 mL (20 drop) DOSE
|WHAT TO USE IT FOR|
|300 mg||30 mL||10 mg||General wellness and day-to-day health|
|600 mg||30 mL||20 mg||Moderate stress, discomfort, inflammation, and mild pain/soreness|
|1,000 mg||30 mL||33.3 mg||Sleep issues, daily stress, anxiety, or depression, day-to-day pain and inflammation|
What CBD Oil Should I Buy?
After reading through the first few sections of this article, you might still be wondering, what CBD oil should I buy? Unfortunately, there’s not one single answer that applies to everybody. Every one of us is different, so we will not all respond in the same way to CBD.
To begin with, ask yourself, why do I want to take CBD? Is it for pain relief, sleep improvement, or to address a mood disorder like anxiety? If it is for any of those reasons, you could discuss this with your doctor to see if CBD is right for you.
Here are a few things to consider when asking yourself, ‘what CBD oil should I buy?’
Body Size Matters for CBD Oil Potency
As mentioned, we recommend starting with a very low dose of CBD to gauge its effects. Of course, not everyone has the same body size and weight. Therefore, a 220lb heavyweight boxer will need a higher dose of CBD than a 126lb jockey.
Still, though, even for people with a higher than average BMI, we recommend starting with a relatively low dose before increasing if necessary.
Earlier, we touched on how CBD oil comes in various bottle sizes containing different concentrations of CBD. The key thing to look out for is the milligram of CBD per serving figure. It will tell you how potent that particular CBD oil is. The CBD oil dosage table above is an excellent guide to figuring out what CBD oil potency you could begin with.
Understanding what you need.…
CBD Results Can Take Time
Do not get discouraged if you do not see immediate results after consuming CBD oil. Bear in mind that it may take some time for you to notice CBD oil’s effects, particularly if you begin with a very low dose.
Be patient, and allow time for the CBD to work. If you are still not seeing satisfactory results, ask yourself if it is time to increase the dose slightly. If in any doubt, consult your physician for dosing-related advice.
How to Choose CBD Oil Strengths
Knowing how to choose a CBD oil that is right for you is not a straightforward process. Hopefully, after reading this article, however, you will have a better understanding of different CBD oil strengths, what potency is most suitable for beginners, and for addressing specific conditions.
If shopping online, be sure to go to the CBD product page of the brand’s website to learn more about the different CBD oils they have on offer.
Final Thoughts on Understanding Which Potency CBD Oil to Take
The main thing to consider when figuring out how to find the right strength CBD oil is to realize that everyone’s internal biochemistry is different. While your friend may be able to ease her stress with just a single 3 mg serving, you may require several times that much in order to obtain the same results. Or, you may not find any relief at all. This is why it’s important to start with the smallest possible dose and work up from there.
Also, make sure you understand that most CBD products on the market are not recognized as medicine. The only FDA-approved clinical use for CBD is in the treatment of Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (two rare forms of pediatric epilepsy).
Because of this, you’ll notice that regardless of strength or potency most all CBD oils on the market put a label on their products that say something like, “this product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”
Lastly, don’t hesitate to speak with a marijuana doctor or healthcare professional about using CBD oil. It is not our goal for any of the information in this article to be taken as clinical advice, or as a medical recommendation. If you live in a state with legalized medical marijuana, make sure you take full advantage of the resources available to you. Getting a licensed MMJ card is easier than it has ever been before, and it could well be an excellent solution for long-term health.

What’s the Normal Dose of CBD?
The most common dose of CBD is 20 – 40 mg per dose. Some people take much less (as low as 1 mg), others take much higher (up to 100 mg).
Depending on the strength of the product you’re using, this could be anywhere from a few drops to several milliliters of oil. It could also involve anywhere from 1 – 5 capsules or gummies per dose.
The truth is that the optimal dose of CBD is different for everybody.
It’s common for two people with identical weights to respond very differently to the same dose of CBD. One person may find the ideal dose for them is 30 mg of CBD, while the other person responds better to just 10 mg.
The ideal dose of CBD for you depends on a variety of factors, including:
- Your size and weight
- The severity of the condition you’re treating
- Your tolerance to CBD
- Your individual body chemistry
- The potency of the CBD oil, capsules, gummies, or other CBD products you’re using
The best way to find the right dose for your body is to start with a very low dose (2 mg, for example) and increase by 2-5 mg per dose until you find what works best for you.
CBD Dosage For Anxiety
The effective dose of CBD oil for anxiety or chronic stress usually falls on the moderate to heavy range of the spectrum.
However, some people with anxiety disorders find they’re especially sensitive to CBD may only need a small dose.
When using CBD oil to manage anxiety levels, it’s best to start with a mild dose first to see how you respond. If you don’t see any improvement, move up to the moderate dosage next. Most people notice improvement with the moderate or heavy dosage according to their weight.
For best results, take CBD oil first thing in the morning, and repeat around lunchtime. Many people will take a mild “booster dose” about 30 to 60 minutes before engaging in activities that trigger their anxiety.
CBD Dosage For Pain
The dose of CBD oil for pain can vary significantly. For mild pain, such as low-grade arthritis, mild PMS pain, or low back pain — a mild or moderate dose of CBD oil will usually do the trick.
For more severe pain, nerve pain, or treatment-resistant multiple sclerosis or cancer pain — you’ll likely need to use a heavy dose of CBD oil.
Some people experience the painkilling benefits of CBD oil immediately, others need to take the oil for a few days or weeks before noticing any improvement.
The time it takes to notice improvement depends on the underlying condition that’s causing the pain.
Inflammatory pain, cancer pain, or pain from endometriosis can take a long time — while arthritis pain, digestive pain, muscle pain, and PMS pain usually improve within a few hours of taking CBD oil.
For arthritis or joint pain, you can get faster effects by using a CBD pain cream alongside your CBD oil.
CBD Dosage For Sleep
CBD oil has been shown to improve both the quality and duration of sleep — but studies have shown the effective dose of CBD oil for sleep is higher than other conditions. Aim for a heavy dose of CBD oil if the goal is to improve your sleep.
Low doses of CBD (less than 10 mg) can have a stimulating effect, while higher doses (20 mg or higher) are generally much more sedative. The more CBD oil you use, the stronger the sedative effect.
Certain types of CBD extracts also tend to have a stronger impact on sleep. For example, CBD oils that contain sleep-supportive terpenes such as linalool, bisabolol, lavandin, or myrcene have the strongest sedative action.
You can also find CBD oils that contain melatonin to make the oil even better for promoting sleep.
CBD Dosage For Depression
CBD oil is useful for managing symptoms of many mood disorders — including depression.
Finding the right dose of CBD oil for depression can take some trial and error. The underlying processes that cause depression don’t happen overnight, and they won’t disappear overnight either. It can take several weeks or months of steady CBD oil supplementation — along with other lifestyle modifications — before you can expect any real improvement.
It’s best to start with a mild or moderate dosage of CBD oil for a few weeks before graduating to the heavy dose once you understand how CBD affects your body individually.
Calculating the Dose of CBD Based on Your Weight (How This Calculator Works)
While the dose of CBD is unique for everybody, there is a general rule of thumb that can be used to determine an estimated dose based on your weight and the strength of effects you’re looking for (low, medium, and high strength).
Our dosage calculator is based on the calculations listed below. These doses are estimates and should not be used to replace professional medical advice regarding dosage.
I recommend you start with the low-strength dose when using CBD for the first time and increase the dose slowly over time. When you find a dose that works, you’ve found the right dose for your body.
If you experience side effects, you’ve found your upper limit. Reduce the dose to the last amount that didn’t produce side effects.
Calculating the Dose of CBD By Weight & Strength:
- Low strength → 1 mg CBD per 10 pounds (2 mg per 10 kg)
- Medium strength → 3 mg CBD per 10 pounds (7 mg per 10 kg)
- High strength → 6 mg CBD per 10 pounds (13 mg per 10 kg)
It’s important to note that this measurement is in pure CBD, not CBD oil.
We’ll go over calculating how much CBD oil this dose works out to later on. Once you know how much CBD you should be using, you can find the equivalent amount of CBD oil depending on the potency of the oil you’re using.
CBD Dosage Chart by Weight & Strength (in mg)
The optimal dose of CBD depends on the combination of your weight and desired dosage.
A smaller, 90 lb woman is going to need a much smaller dose than a large 250 lb football player — for example. And someone looking for mild relief from stress or anxiety isn’t going to need a high dose like someone looking to treat persistent pain.
You can use this CBD dosage chart to visualize how the dose of CBD changes according to your body weight and desired strength of effects.

What Is Full Spectrum CBD Oil?
Full spectrum CBD oil contains all the compounds found in cannabis, including but not limited to cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN), terpenes and other cannabinol. It is known to have many health benefits for humans.
How does full spectrum CBD oil make me feel?
Full spectrum CBD oil has a subtle effect on the mind and body. It can help you to become more relaxed, centred and grounded during your day-to-day activities. Taking daily doses of CBD can improve your concentration, making it easier to get through your day. In addition, it is known to have a calming effect on the mind and body.
It can also help with pain relief as well as helping you become less anxious or stressed.
When a person takes full spectrum CBD oil it has varying effects on the body depending on the individual’s needs. Your body will use CBD to help heal any areas you’re having problems with. In general, people experience a sense of relief, relaxation, and balance when they take CBD.
Difference Between Full Spectrum CBD Oil Vs Regular CBD Oil?
There are three main types of cannabidiol or CBD. These are broad-spectrum CBD, CBD isolate, which is a pure form of CBD and full spectrum CBD, which contains other parts of the cannabis plant. Unlike regular hemp oil, full spectrum oil encompasses all the cannabis plant compounds. This makes full spectrum oil more potent with stronger effects on the body. Researchers have discovered that the benefits of CBD oil are more prominent when it has multiple compounds from the cannabis plant, including CBD, CBD, CBN, CBDA work together. This is known as the ‘entourage effect,’ making full spectrum oil a premium CBD product.
In contrast, CBD isolate, or regular CBD oil contains very little or no other cannabinoids.
Benefits of full spectrum oil vs hemp oil?
Full spectrum oil is packed full of all of the cannabis plant’s natural and most beneficial properties, including CBD and over 100 cannabinoids as well as flavonoids and terpenes. In contrast, CBD isolates or regular hemp oil only contain one cannabinoid, which is CBD.
Here are some of the benefits of full spectrum CBD oil:
• Relaxes body and mind
• May relieve pain and discomfort (CBD should not be used to treat medical conditions, please consult a physician before using CBD)
• May improve sleep cycles
• May have many other health benefits found online and in published medical studies.
If you choose to take full spectrum CBD over hemp oil the plant’s many compounds synchronize together, which in effect, boosts the overall benefits to your body and mind. When the different cannabis compounds work in harmony together, the resulting effect is far more powerful than a single cannabinoid on its own. The mix of cannabinoids is what sets full spectrum CBD oil apart from the rest.
Regular hemp oil is a pure form of CBD and can be a good option for new CBD users who wish to experiment. Hemp oil is also refined meaning it doesn’t have a discernible taste or odor to it.
Hemp oil gets its benefits due to its high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These are alpha-linolenic acid, linoleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid.
Here are some of the benefits of regular hemp oil:
• Improved skin
• May help with pain relief (CBD should not be used to treat medical conditions, please consult a physician before using CBD)
• Helps to reduce inflammation
• No taste or odor
Both regular hemp oil and full spectrum CBD oil have their benefits. Although preliminary research is looking very positive, it’s important to note that more research is needed into the full benefits and effects of CBD on humans. As well as the role CBD will play going forward in treating a variety of different health conditions and disorders.
Types of Full Spectrum Oil for Sale
Here at JustCBD we offer our Full Spectrum CBD oil in six different strengths. Including 50mg, 100mg, 250mg, 550mg, 1000mg and 1500mg. Each bottle is 30ml.
What is your correct dose for you?
A common dosage of CBD is between 20 – 40 mg however the optimum dose will vary depending on the individual and their needs. The dosage you take will largely depend on the CBD product you’re using. CBD gummies, pills and capsules generally tell you how much CBD is in each item on the containers they come in. For instance, a CBD pill might contain 5 mg of CBD per pill.
If you choose to use CBD oils they generally come in dropper bottles. You can work out how much CBD you’ll get in a single drop. Armed with that information you can then decide how many drops to have each time.
Our Full Spectrum CBD Oil comes in six strengths including 50mg, 100mg, 250mg, 550mg, 1000mg and 1500mg. The bottles themselves are 30ml and the eyedropper is 1/ml. To work out how much CBD you’ll get in one full eyedropper you need to divide 30 by the mg of CBD in that particular bottle.
For example, if you purchased our 100mg bottle you need to divide 30 by 100 which equals 33.33mg. This means you’ll get 33.33mg of CBD in one full dropper.
For our JustCBD full spectrum CBD oil tinctures we recommend having 10 -30 mg per dose. Of course this amount will depend on your preferences and tolerance levels. In most clinical studies the dosages range from 20mg to 1,500 mg per day. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) typical dosages in clinical trials are between 100 and 800 milligrams per day.
Recent studies and research into CBD and its effects on humans have found that, even in high doses of 1500 mg per day, CBD is well tolerated by humans. There are very few recorded side effects to taking CBD. The World Health Organization (WHO) have reported that in general, people tolerate CBD well.
If you have any underlying health conditions, always speak to a healthcare professional before taking any new products. They should be able to advise you on the correct dosage for you as well as any potential risks.
How often should I take full spectrum CBD oil?
How often you take your full spectrum CBD oil is down to your individual circumstances. Always start small and increase the frequency of your doses over time. A lot of people like to take one dose in the morning, one at lunchtime and one just before bed. If you find your body is responding well to the CBD, you can increase the frequency.
Start Slowly If you’re new to CBD it’s always best to begin with a little dose to see how your body reacts and work your way up to a higher one. As a general guide you can start at 20 to 40 mg per day. Try that dosage for one week so you can assess how you feel and then increase the dosage by 5 mg if necessary. Continue with this dosage routine until the CBD is having a positive effect on your symptoms.
In general, the CBD reaches your bloodstream between 20-45 minutes after taking it. So please be patient and enjoy the relaxing experience.
Here’s an example of how this dosage routine might work. If you suffer with severe pain start with a daily 40 mg dosage of CBD. Only take the 40 mg on days when your pain is very high. After a week at that dose, reassess how you’re feeling. If you think need more, increase the dosage to 45 mg per day. After the second week you can then go up to 50 mg if needed. It’s at this point that the CBD should be having a positive effect on your body.
We’d advise keeping track of the CBD dosage you’re on and noting any changes in your body and mind.
Main factors that affect dosing
The ideal dosage of CBD for you will vary depending on a variety of factors and your reason for taking CBD in the first place.
Here are some other factors to consider before taking CBD:
You need to consider your body weight before deciding on your CBD dosage. In clinical trials doctors calculate the dose per kg to body weight. Therefore, people that weigh less should take smaller doses than a person that weighs more.
As a rough guide if you weigh between 100 – 130 lbs a low dose of CBD would be 10-17mg, a medium dose would be 21 -25mg and a high dose would be 30 – 37 mg. If you weigh between 190 – 220 lbs a low dose would be 35 -39 mg, a medium dose would be 42 – 50mg and a high dose would be 52 – 58 mg. If you weigh 280 lbs or over a low dose would be 53mg+, a medium dose would be 75mg+ and a high dose would be 90mg+.
Everybody has a different tolerance level to CBD. In general, a person that regularly consumes CBD will have a higher tolerance level than someone that doesn’t. If you’re new to CBD we suggest building up your tolerance overtime. If you find you are not that affected by CBD increase your dosage.
The reason you’re using the CBD product
How much CBD you take will depend on the reason you’re taking CBD in the first place. For example, people with certain conditions such as epilepsy may need to take higher doses compared to a person that is taking CBD for anxiety. By considering the reason you’re taking CBD you can tailor your dosage for your needs. The concentration of CBD in the product
Another important factor to consider is the concentration level of CBD in the product you’re using. CBD capsules and pills contain a specific dosage in each individual product whereas oils and tinctures are slightly more varied. Always check the concentration levels of the product before you begin taking it.
The type of CBD product you’re using
The type of CBD products you’re using can have an impact on the dosage you require. Edible and oil-based CBD products must pass through the digestive system before entering the bloodstream this means they take slightly longer to take effect. Vapes, however, bypass the digestive system meaning the CBD will enter your system much faster.
The amount of alcohol you regularly consume can have an impact on your CBD dosage. The same applies for other central nervous system depressants such as barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and other sleep medications. These types of depressants can cause the sedation effect of the CBD to amplify, which can cause drowsiness. If you use these types of central nervous system depressants, it is advised to take a lower dose of CBD. Always consult your doctor before mixing CBD with medications.
If you take regular medication you need to check that it’s safe for you to use CBD in conjunction with your medication as well as the correct dosage. As CBD is a biologically active compound some medications, especially sleep medications may alter the effect that CBD has on the body. Extra care should be taken if you regularly take opioids, antidepressants, antipsychotics, or antihistamines. Always speak to your doctor or healthcare provider before taking CBD.
